Essential Material Concepts
Shading Pipeline Overview
- Shaders in UE written in HLSL; converted to assembly the GPU executes.
- Editor: create Materials in Material Editor; node graphs silently translated to HLSL. View via Window > Shader Code > HLSL Code (read-only; cannot edit HLSL directly in editor).
Workflow
- Material Domain, Blend Mode, Shading Model are the three foundational properties — configure first; they enable/disable Main Material Node inputs (e.g. Opacity grayed for Opaque).
- Material Expressions = visual representation of HLSL snippets; data flows left→right via cables; only chains connected to Main Material Node affect the Material.
- Apply/Save compiles; complex materials can take minutes → Material Instancing reduces iteration delay.
- Material Instances: variations without recompiling parent; expose parameters to artists.
- Material Functions: package networks into reusable library nodes (e.g. Blend_Overlay).
Color and Data
- RGBA model; float / float2 / float3 / float4. See Material Data Types page.
